October 22, 2010 (Chicago, IL) – Darryl Rosser, CEO of Sagus International, was one of more than 1,500 volunteers who served as a Principal for a Day on October 21, 2010 in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS). Darryl was pleased to serve a second term as "Principal for a Day" at Walter Payton College Preparatory School.
Mayor Richard M. Daley initiated the Principal for a Day (PFAD) program in 1998 in an effort to encourage the civic and corporate communities of the Chicago area to adopt and support individual schools. After 12 years of the program it is still going strong and is a big success for the mayor.
"One of the most successful programs we have for broadening support for our school system is "Principal for a Day," he said. "I want to encourage our community groups, not-for-profits and faith-based groups, parents, grandparents and friends of our students to step up and help our school system keep moving forward."
The Principal for a Day program provides opportunity for members of the civic, business, philanthropic, faith and other communities to engage with schools, staff and students. The goal behind the program is to encourage meaningful public and private partnerships between PFADs, their companies/organizations and schools.
Mr. Rosser spent the day shadowing the school's actual principal, Ellen Estrada, engaging with students, parents, faculty, and monitoring class activities. At the end of the day, Mr. Rosser, Principal Estrada and Assistant Principal Mike Hermes joined other PFAD's for a reception with Mayor Daley, CPS CEO Ron Hubbard, and other members of the CPS executive team. Beyond the students, Principal Estrada and her staff do an amazing job of creating the educational environment that allows students to reach their fullest potential," said Rosser. "It was a tremendous experience for me to have the opportunity to serve in this honorary capacity for the day." Walter Payton College Prep. Is one of the top 50 schools in America, based on rankings of various standard tests and they recently were awarded the Star Innovator Award from the Intel Schools of Distinction Competition.
"Our students are the future of our city. We want to encourage business and civic leaders to contribute further to this future by working with our schools in areas such as career education and job creation," Mayor Daley said.
